In honor of National Dolphin Day, I want to tell you a bit about a book called “The Dolphin’s Secret: A Meditational Journey for Children“ by Meryl Best Lowell ( @merylbestlowell ). I’m really looking forward to receiving it and reviewing it. . It teaches kids techniques to ease anxiety and promote happiness through a whimsical story of a mermaid and her dolphin friend.. . As a parent in 2019, I can’t dismiss all the data coming across my radar about how anxiety is affecting our children. I have a hard enough time dealing with my own anxiety, let alone helping my children cope with whatever they may face. That’s why I like the idea of this book.. . I’ve been given permission to share an excerpt of the book with you: “Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, and pretend you are blowing bubbles under the water, just like a dolphin. Keep taking slow, deep breaths in through your nose and blow out through your mouth very, very slowly. With each breath in, fill yourself with joy. Each time you breathe out, relax just a little more. Imagine bubbles of all sizes floating around you. “. . I got this guided meditation book for my 8-year-old who loves dolphins. She also struggles with anxiety and sometimes can’t get to sleep at night. She is a perfectionist and with all the school projects coming to a close,this month has been especially difficult. I know how helpful mindfulness has been for myself in getting to sleep. So this mindfulness journey with Meri the mermaid 🧜🏻♀️and Aloha the dolphin, 🐬was a perfect fit for my daughter. The first night we read it together she asked me to just turn off her reading light and let her go right to sleep because she was so relaxed! It served its purpose and then…. 👧🏻 My baby (toddler) is struggling to ween from a binky. She can’t relax and get to sleep. Although the book is intended for older kids who ca be lead in mindfulness techniques, I read it with the toddler. She practiced breathing, relaxing, and blowing bubbles. The pictures of kids relaxing under a blanket and breathing have been so helpful. She doesn’t exactly understand how to be mindful, but learning to slow down our breathing and let our body relax is a great skill to have from an early age.
